We build software we believe in. This means really good products, thoughtful user experiences, last partnerships, and shared risk & reward.
We invest in startups and partner with large organizations to co-create software we believe in.
We take an idea from vision to product. Then we bet on its success.
We brought together nearly 100 of the most talented entrepreneurial software developers, designers, and strategists in the world to find opportunities to do what we love most: build great software with great people.
Because we believe in what we do, we also invest in what we do. For start-ups, this means equity for development and helping build in-house teams when the time is right. For an enterprise, this is shared investment in strategic initiatives or product-based revenue sharing. And for NGO's & the public sector, these are joint projects with an opportunity to make a difference in people's lives. We invest through unique shared-risk shared-reward models designed to create perfect alignment, inspired innovation, and creation of shared value.
We use an agile approach to build software. This means we believe in transparency, flexibility, and speed. And we’re really good at it. There are so many open source libraries and frameworks available now that great developers can build production quality software faster and cheaper than others can offer third party software customizations or licenses. We will literally transform a perfect vision into a perfect product while you watch.
Our strength is iOS, Android, Rails, Scala, Java, jQuery, MongoDB, Neo4j, Lucene, and a few others we usually won't admit. We've created successful software in health care, education, gaming, social media, eCommerce, networking, hospitality, virtualization, and even fashion.
Bottom line... if you are the great people (or team) we are looking for and need help building your software vision, talk to us. If we believe in your vision and can build what you need, we will find a way to become successful together.
Investment: For early-stage start-ups, we invest capital and our elite team of engineers, designers and strategists in exchange for equity. Like all investment firms, we require full due-diligence and approval from our investment committee. We invest in solid teams, high potential markets, unique ideas, and interesting IP. You should expect us to complete our process in 2-4 weeks should we choose to invest.
Equity Blend: For early and mid-stage start-ups with some funding, we provide design and development resources for a combination of cash and equity. This costs less than hiring consultants (and often less than hiring in-house) since we take our upside in equity, options, or warrants. Our fast-track due-diligence process normally allows us to structure this type of deal in less than a week.
Success Incentive: For later stage startups, large companies, and government organizations, equity is often not an option. We believe that there is amazing opportunity for start-up-like innovation to happen at this stage. We are flexible in structuring deals that are primarily cash-based, but include incentives such as options, bonuses, shared IP, or other incentives for meeting performance goals. In fact, we will insist on at least giving a discount in exchange for an upside opportunity since we believe in always working as an aligned partner.
Revenue share: For start-ups or companies with a specific product-based strategy, there is often a clear path to revenue. We can partner in product development and share the upside in future revenue. We bring product design, development, deployment, and strategy to the partnership. We look for partners that bring domain expertise, industry relationships, monetization channels, marketing budget, and user acquisition expertise.
EIR Program: For the entrepreneur that is still working through an idea, learning the business, or bootstrapping their product, the timing may not yet be right to go all-in to create a start-up. And since bills don’t stop for entrepreneurship, many entrepreneurs work full time jobs or consult while they devote their nights and weekends to their dream. We believe there is a better way, and our Entrepreneur in Residence program is our answer. Originate hires entrepreneurs full or part-time then allows them time, resources, and support to devote to their own endeavor. When the time comes to go all-in, we want to be the first to invest.
Team Build-out: For the start-up on a mission to build their own in-house team, we have a unique model to get there faster. Originate can fill resource gaps while we help you recruit. We build in-house teams that we both believe in, and transition them for long-term success - all through our model of shared-risk, shared-reward. This creates full alignment and saves our partners time and money. Great engineers and products attract great engineers.

Bar Karma
Crowd-Sourced TV
Bar Karma is the first-ever completely crowd-sourced television show, from the mind of game designer Will Wright, creator of SimCity and Spore. The show is produced in collaboration with Current TV and Albie Hecht, founder of Spike TV and former head of Nickelodeon Entertainment.
The concept is simple: harness the creative juices of a large community of people to make a great television program. The implementation is the trick. The process starts with ideas being storyboarded and developed by the thousands of collaborators within the Bar Karma community and then voting on the winning story-lines. The winning story-lines are then written, produced, and filmed by Current TV. All of this collaboration takes place using online or mobile StoryMaker tools for users to upload and generate content, vote on ideas, and churn out the winning show.
Originate has conceptualized and developed all of the mobile tools (iPhone, iPad and Android) for this exciting experiment/show and is proud to partner with such visionaries in the entertainment industry.
